Description

Takaungu House

An outstanding colonial home on a secluded beach on the Indian Ocean, this eight-bedroom masterpiece rests on 6000 square feet. Takaungu House is the original dwelling house built many years ago by the Arab trader who originally made this little smidge of heaven his summer beach getaway.

The house is perched on a bluff overlooking the sea and the long white beach. The walls are thick limestone or coral rag and the sea breezes keep it cool (however, all bedrooms have standing fans). Each room is styled in a pristinely white design, complete with rustic wood finishes and vibrantly colored décor that will delight your senses. With plush sofas, wonderful interiors, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living, this exotic getaway offers an escape from the troubles of the real world back to a simpler time.

Each of the eight bedrooms at this sprawling property offers lovely draped mosquito nets on wooden frames, and premium, lavish bedding that will soothe you as you drift off to sleep at night.

The beach is a haven of peace and provides excellent swimming depending on the state of the tide. There can be quite strong currents at high tide but low tide leaves pools and wallows, especially at the southern end of the beach where the 'cool pool' provides respite for the serious sunbather and becomes the ultimate children’s pool!

Snorkeling is great just off the reef at low tide (choose your times around an hour each side of low tide). There are masks, snorkels, and fins available. Green turtles feed inshore just off the beach at high tide in front of the houses. We operate a 'turtle watch' system with the local fishermen to try and protect them on this, nesting, beach. Big Game Fishing is spectacular on the Kenyan Coast and available locally from Kilifi.

Diving can be arranged through a local operator. The local reefs are wonderful and the Vuma caves to the south of Takaungu can be very dramatic and are rated as one of the finest dives on the coast. There are caves and blowholes, with deep water just a few yards from the cliffs, frequented by grouper and snapper, giant Napoleon wrasse and visiting pelagic.

The nearby Vipingo Ridge 18-Hole Golf Course is a must for serious golfers, with other activities also available at the resort (including horseback riding). Also, Kenya is famous for its wildlife and game parks. Takaungu House makes a wonderful point at which to start or end a Safari.

Adventure and luxury mix together at this incredible home to create the perfect escape to the Kenyan coast!

What a location and staff!!

Takaungu House is a very pleasant retreat in a rural area of Kenya. The view is splendid as you look over the ocean and a white sandy beach. Also, the staff is just amazing and they really make your life comfortable. Finally, their cooking was really great!”

Terriffic Stay

First let me say that Takaungu may not be for everyone. It is a bit of a drive from Mombasa and quite remote. It's remoteness contributes to occasional Wi-Fi issues. Having now experienced Mombasa, I would also not recommend renting a car but rather use Taxis and drivers to get around. With that said our stay at Takaungu was fantastic. The house is beautiful and while certainly open air we enjoyed the experience very much! Takaungu has a marvelous full time staff and we enjoyed the daily breakfast and several of the dinners we had while at the house in the evening. We used the house as a base to explore the general region and we experienced a fine 2 day 1 night safari and deep sea fishing along with fantastic snorkeling at two separate locations and great tide pooling directly in front of Takaungu. Philip, the owner was great in responding to all of our questions and steered us in the right direction. We are looking forward to a return trip to Kenya and Takaungu in particular.
