Description

St Peter’s Church

Nestled within the Southern Midlands, Historic Kempton is one of Tasmania's well-kept secrets. It is a colonial town with roots dating back to the 1820s, just 40 minutes from Hobart. Surrounded by the picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and expansive plains characteristic of the local farming country, Kempton exudes a palpable sense of community, boasting an array of meticulously preserved historic properties.

Notably, the former St Peter's church, a Tasmanian landmark dating back to 1918, is a testament to architectural redemption. Meticulously restored and converted into a superior residence, this iconic structure seamlessly merges classic period features with modern conveniences. The home comprises three bedrooms, each complemented by sleek en-suite bathrooms, soaring ceilings, hardwood floors, and original stained glass windows that immediately captivate upon entry, exuding a genuine warmth that resonates throughout.

Constructed in the Romanesque revival style, the property showcases semi-circular arches on doorways, windows, decorative elements, corner buttresses, a tower with a parapet and corner crenels, and a spire. Situated centrally within 5000 sqft of meticulously landscaped parklike gardens and rolling lawns, the residence is adorned with arbours and manicured box hedges.

The residence's flexible and generous floor plan is marked by stately proportions, with the central living zone offering exquisite entertaining options that seamlessly extend to a sandstone-paved courtyard at the rear, surrounded by classic plantings, fostering an engaging indoor/outdoor dimension. A spacious upper-level living room adds to the daily living amenity. At the same time, the contemporary, concealed galley-style kitchen, boasting European excellence in fittings, is both effortless and highly functional, complemented by a sizable island bench. This property exemplifies a harmonious blend of historic charm and modern luxury, preserving the integrity of its bygone era while catering to contemporary living standards.

A very special home

Our time at St Peter's church was lovely. A beautifully restored church that provided a warm and comfortable stay. The kitchen was little disappointing. It looked like some renovations were not quite complete with a big hole where I guess a cupboard used to be but was full of cobwebs which we cleaned away. Apart from that it was a special and memorable Thirdhome getaway which I highly recommend.”
