April 2023SAN LUIS RESORT, GALVESTON TEXAS - SAD ENDING
The San Luis Resort is probably the largest and most luxurious on Galveston Island. The condo was small but clean and nicely furnished. I had invited a couple to share the week with me and gave them the only bedroom while I slept on the pull-out couch. It was not uncomfortable but did fill the entire living space when open. A small hall closet was available for hanging my clothes and storing my suitcase so that helped eliminate some clutter in the living room. Sharing the one bathroom was not much of a problem but the undersized doorway was troublesome and we were puzzled as to why it had been installed instead of one of a standard width. The kitchen area was also tight but well furnished with dishes, glasses and the necessities. If the owner had provided a list of items furnished it would have been helpful, the type of coffee pot for example. The 5 story view of the beach and the Gulf of Mexico across the street was wonderful and there were two balconies with chairs and tables from which to enjoy it. They also overlooked the front grounds and pool and hot tub which we never had a chance to try out. We arrived during a downpour on Friday afternoon and spent the next several rainy days driving around and dining out. On Tuesday I had a Zoom meeting and stayed in the condo while my friends spent some time exploring Moody Gardens. With the weather improving we had plans to spend more time outdoors and check out the pool and maybe the beach. But then the condo management phoned and it all fell apart! When they told me they were going to be working on the plumbing in the bathroom I asked that it be delayed until we left on Friday morning. But in a second call I was informed that they were going to be upgrading the plumbing in the entire condo building and would be TURNING OFF THE WATER from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday! We could use the toilets and showers in the spa in the hotel NEXT DOOR! Surely the management would not have scheduled such a significant and disruptive project without informing the condo owners? Fortunately we had driven from our homes in Austin to Galveston, about a 3.5 hour drive, and at least didn’t have airline complications - so we left Tuesday evening! But we were extremely disappointed and more than a little angry at having our visit truncated so abruptly. We felt the condo was ideally located, clean, and adequately furnished, but priced a little high by Third Home standards. I contacted Third Home and was given a partial refund, but we would definitely have preferred having the week’s “get away” that we had planned. ”
